The left project is responsive wearables introduces protective gear
that transforms in response the body’s movements, adapting to its protection needs.
Current forms of protective gear are static and singlepurpose.
Certain sports like skiing, figure skating, gymnastics,
and tricking require high levels of dexterity and mobility
while simultaneously being high-impact or appearancefocused.
Traditional protective gear would weigh down the
user, block body movements, or distract from the user’s
presentation.
We propose a new approach to protective gear that uses
the body’s movements (eg. extension or flexion of joints) to
trigger transformations of the gear’s form and protective
properties as needed for different injury scenarios. The
applications of this low-profile, responsive gear range from
the extreme sports above to everyday support and physical
rehabilitation.
